Carrefour has celebrated the role of its checkout staff – who make up almost a third of its in-store workforce – in the success of the company, with altruistic initiatives in its European branches, as well as events further afield.
Among the highlights was a 56-recipe cookbook written by the checkout staff of its Italian unit that was sold in-supermarket, with the proceeds going to the NutriAid organisation, which strives to deliver access to food for children globally. The featured recipes were voted for by shoppers.
In Belgium, in order to mark ‘Cashiers Day’ on 19 November, checkout staff produced a book of ‘special moments shared with their customers, now immortalised on paper’, with the profits going to breast-cancer charity Pink Ribbon. Copies were sold within Carrefour branches.
Beyond this, the supermarkets chain’s Polish arm organised a fashion show featuring its checkout staff, and its staff in Romania took part in a talent competition.
