Carrefour has opened its first wholesale store in India. The first Carrefour Wholesale Cash & Carry store is located in the shopping district of Shahadra, east of New Delhi. As wholesale stores are the only food distribution business that can be opened in India by foreign companies, this is a major breakthrough for the French giant having tried for many years to enter this lucrative market.
Under the strict Indian laws surrounding retail, Carrefour may engage only in wholesale in the country unless it can secure a local partner to launch into the supermarket business there. The new store contains over 10,000 products on its shelves and covers a floor space of 5,200 m2. (5 Jan)
