French retailer Carrefour has announced that its franchise partner in Africa, Majid Al Futtaim, has opened two new hypermarkets in Nairobi and Egypt.
The latter country's hypermarket is located in the 'Mall of Egypt', a major shopping centre located in Giza, opposite Old Cairo.
Group-owned, with a sales area of 400,000 square metres, it is Africa's largest mall.
It holds 340 stores, as well as entertainment and leisure facilities such as a ski slope, a Vox cinema, and a 'magic planet' area for younger shoppers.
The hypermarket itself has a sales space of 8,000 square metres and a staff of 450.
In Nairobi, the new hypermarket is located at the Two Rivers Mall in the city's diplomatic 'blue zone' on Limuru Road.
Possessing 7,200 square metres of sales space, the new outlet will create 205 jobs.
The mall itself boasts the largest concentration of solar panels on its roof in Africa, which can create 2MW of solar power. Eighty percent of any wastewater is recycled and treated in accordance with WHO standards.
Currently, the Majid Al Futtaim Group owns 36 Carrefour stores, including 11 hypermarkets and 25 Carrefour Market stores.
