Retail giant Carrefour has announced a partnership with an American NGO, Seafood Watch, for implementing better conservation practices for its fish supply chain in Brazil.
The project is being supported by Paiche, a Brazilian seafood sustainability consultancy.
Seafood Watch will map Brazil's fish supply chain this year and ‘identify opportunities’ that will ensure the ‘sustainability of the entire breeding and fishing process’.
The partnership with Seafood Watch is in line with Carrefour 2022 - a five-year transformation plan announced by the company in January this year.
Sustainable Fish Supply Chain
In addition to directing Carrefour’s purchasing policy in the country, the NGO will also also publish a report that will help suppliers to handle popular species of fish in ways that promote sustainability. The successful implementation of the project revolves around two fundamental aspects.
The first is to monitor and support suppliers so that they successfully work towards protecting biodiversity.
The other aspect is to raise awareness among customers about 'the importance of sustainable management and the responsible consumption of fish.'
The partnership will make Carrefour the first company in Brazil to monitor the fish supply chain and come up with solutions that contribute towards conserving it.
It is also the first time that an NGO based in California has partnered with a retail company in Brazil.
