Carrefour's Polish operation has announced that, following the roll-out of an internal transport management system (TMS), its truck fleet has reduced its annual distance travelled by two million kilometres in the past year.
Using the TMS, the retailer has sought to optimise the loading of its truck fleet, as well as reducing the number of empty truck journeys.
The TMS is a multi-module tool that enables optimisation of the transport process from the supplier to the store, and facilitates communication across the different aspects of the supply chain.
Maximising Capacity
Carrefour has also modified the loading of its trucks, maximising the height of its carriers to ensure that all trucks are filled as completely as possible, therefore reducing the number of kilometres driven.
Backhauling has also enabled Carrefour to reduce the number of empty truck journeys from the store to the warehouse by 25% to 35%, it said.
Carrefour has set itself the goal of reducing CO2 emissions by 40% by 2025 and by 70% by 2050, compared to 2010 levels. To achieve this, the company has pledged to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions related to transport by 30%.
