Carrefour Spain has announced the launch of Reciclaya, an app that will help customers to adopt recycling best practices.
The app can help inform the customer on the lifecycle of a particular product, by scanning the bar code on their receipt. The app will automatically separate the products into virtual waste bins so that customers can place them into the corresponding bin Carrefour says.
After a pilot experiment with 50 customers, Carrefour is now officially launching the app on a national scale.
The app is based on the European research initiative TagItSmart, which provides a way for FMCG products to become 'smart' via the use of QR codes and IoT tracking technologies, in order to create a more transparent view of the whole value chain from manufacturer to transportation, retail, consumer and recycling.
The move comes as part of Carrefour's commitment to reduce its environmental impact and promote sustainable development as per the retailer's Carrefour 2022 plan. As well as targeting 'digital transformation' and 'food transition', the strategy largely focuses on respect for the environment.
