Carrefour’s Spanish arm has become the first retail firm in the world to begin using mobile payments in its petrol stations.
At present, the French company operates 122 filling stations throughout Spain. In these outlets, customers can now use the My Carrefour app to pay for petrol and/or in-shop SKUs.
'The service is restricted to pass-card holders, who have to register via a safe and easy form in the app,' Carrefour says. 'Once registered with the service, customers can pay for their fuel without having to leave their cars.
'The app uses geolocation to identify the service station visited by the customer. The customer then has to select the pump, product and amount before refuelling as normal. If the customer is in a non-Carrefour service station, the My Carrefour app shows the nearest Carrefour fuelling point.'
The supermarket giant also offers its clientele discounts on food SKUs through usage of its filling stations.
