Carrefour's 2016 turnover surpassed Grupo Pão de Açúcar (GPA), making it the top grocery retailer in Brazil last year.
According to data from the Brazilian Association of Supermarkets (ABRAS), Carrefour ended the year with a turnover of BRL 49.1 billion (€14.4 billion), moving it from second to first place in the ranking.
GPA (owned by France’s Casino group) dropped to second, with a turnover of BRL 44.9 billion (€13.2 billion), followed by Walmart Brazil with BRL 29.4 billion (€8.67 billion).
Overview
Overall, the grocery retail sector ended 2016 with a turnover of BRL 338.7 billion (€99.9 billion), representing an annual growth of 7.1%.
The ranking also reveals that the sector ended 2016 with 89,000 stores and 1.8 million employees.
ABRAS data for February 2017 show a 0.24% drop in real sales (discounting inflation) compared to the same period in 2016 and by 1.93% compared to January 2017.
Grocery sector sales rose in February by 4.56% compared to February 2016, but fell 1.61% in relation to January 2017.
