French retailer Carrefour has started offering a new range of higher volume pack sizes in 40 hypermarkets across Belgium.
Marketed under the motto 'Buy more, pay less', the chain is mainly targeting professional buyers, although the products can also be purchased by individual customers.
The ‘Maxi Pack’ corner is found at the entrance of each Carrefour hypermarket.
The intention is to fill the gap left by the closure of cash & carry chain Makro which was known for offering large-volume pack sizes.
'A New Concept'
"This is a brand new concept that we have been rolling out in over the past few months," Siryn Stambouli, spokesperson & PR manager at Carrefour Belgium, told local daily Het Nieuwsblad.
"We found that there was a demand from our customers, hence this new range. We notice that the concept mainly catches on with youth clubs and professionals. Restaurant owners often work with a regular supplier, but come to us when they need something last minute."
For now, Carrefour's assortment is limited to 162 SKUs, such as sugar and salt in bulk, large packages of pasta, chocolate, or large cans of olive oil and tomato sauce.
Each are priced up to 30% lower than the same product in the standard format.
For now, Carrefour has no plans to expand the concept to the smaller Carrefour Market stores. However, the retailer said that the product offer may be further expanded in the coming weeks and months.
