Co-op And Sainsbury's Match Tesco Price Cut On Milk

In the same week that Tesco slashed the price the price of its milk, fears over a price-war ensuing between Britain's largest supermarkets has begun after Sainsbury's and the Co-op followed suit with similar cuts.

On Monday, Tesco decided to cut the price of four pints of milk down from £1.39 to £1.

Sainsbury's announced it would match Tesco prices after the UK's largest supermarket made the cut.

The Co-op dropped the price on one pint to 45p from 50p, but said it would leave the price of its four-pint bottles unchanged. Asda has sold four pints for £1 for more than a year.

The president of the National Farmers' Union, Meurig Raymond, said farmers were concerned that the price war could undermine farm gate prices.

He said: "We will be monitoring all retailers to ensure these price promotions do not get passed back to the farmer."
