Continente has introduced 'sushi kiosks' in some of its supermarkets and hypermarkets in Portugal.
The sushi is prepared on the spot and throughout the day by a certified sushi chef, using fresh ingredients and ensuring a quality product.
Teas and other drinks, seaweed and soy sauce are also available to accompany the sushi. Those consumers who like to prepare their own sushi at home can purchase accessories, cooking utensils and specific ingredients.
Changing Consumer Trends
The initiative by retail group Sonae MC is in response to new consumer trends and lifestyles, and has so far received very positive feedback from customers.
The sushi kiosks are available in stores in Oeiras, Braga, Matosinhos, Forum Coimbra, Amadora, Telheiras, Colombo, Guia, Cascais, Seixal and Vasco da Gama, and a new one will open in Loures Shopping by the end of July.
However, Continente is not the only retailer in Portugal to come up with the concept. Since 2015, Jumbo has opened several sushi bars in selected stores, in partnership with Sushi Gourmet, and sushi fans can also find similar corners in a small number of Pingo Doce and Intermarché stores. In August of last year, UK retailer Marks & Spencer announced it was trialling fresh sushi counters in its stores, in partnership with London-based food chain Wasabi.
