Portuguese hypermarket chain Continente had over 500,000 customers using its online store in 2016, representing an increase of 25% over the previous year.
Continente's marketing director, Pedro Santos, told Jornal de Negocios that changing purchasing habits have led grocery retailers giving increased priority to the digital channel, adding that the retailer has seen double-digit growth for online purchases in recent years.
However, Santos did not reveal the turnover figures from the digital channel, but said that its contribution to the overall sales of the company is in single digits.
Digital Focus
Despite launching the online service 16 years ago, Continente has seen digital sales grow rapidly in the past two years.
Besides grocery products, Continente has added new segments to its online portfolio in recent years, such as pharmacy products, toys, and homewares.
