The Continente hypermarket chain has emerged as the cheapest food retailer in Portugal, surpassing former leader Jumbo, which dropped to third place.
The top four also includes Continente Modelo in second place, while supermarket chain Pingo Doce placed fourth.
The market survey, conducted by Portuguese consumer association Proteste-Deco, analysed two sample baskets, each with 92 products, across a total of 476 shops in all districts. One basket contained only manufacturer brands, while the second combined manufacturer and private-label brands.
Continente was found to be the leader in savings in 16 of the 18 districts of mainland Portugal, with the exception of Porto and Setúbal, where Jumbo hypermarkets were found to be the cheapest.
The difference in price, between the cheapest and the most expensive chain, is an average of 19% nationally.
In regional terms, the district of Lisbon has the largest difference in price, between the cheapest and the most expensive store, at €501.
Grocery products were the cheapest in Continente and Jumbo stores, while fresh products were the least expensive in Continente and Continente Modelo. In terms of online grocery shopping, Jumbo was found to be the chain with the most affordable prices.
