Coviran Creates More Jobs Per Sales Than Rivals

Spanish food retailer Coviran claims it creates three times more jobs per sales point than the industry average.

It says that by betting on the local development in the areas in which it operates, and thanks to its cooperative model, Coviran has maximized the way it redistributes wealth, and can reinvest it directly into local economies, creating shared value.

As a result, for every €1 million it makes, Coviran employs 12 workers, while its major competitors only create four jobs.

Currently, the cooperative consists of more than 2,800 independent retailers who employ 14,886 people. In 2014, Coviran created more than 700 jobs and maintained its growth estimates for Iberian Peninsula.

According to managing director Luis Osuna, Coviran supports small and medium entrepreneurs and is willing to bet on the profitability of their businesses, working on their training and developing policies that facilitate the reconciliation of work and family life.

Coviran is currently the third biggest retailer in Portugal,  and the second biggest in Spain. At the end of 2014 it had more than 3,245 supermarkets across the Iberian peninsula and turnover of €618 million (an increase of 3 per cent  year-on-year).
