Spanish retail group Dia has reported a 1.7 per cent decrease in net sales in Portugal during the first half of 2016, to €342.2 million.
However, when gross sales are taken into account (including VAT and sales by franchisees), Portugal recorded 0.7 per cent growth in the same period, to €402.5 million.
As a result, Portugal accounted for 8 per cent of total sales by the Dia group between January and June this year.
In Portugal, the group operates the Minipreço supermarkets with a total of 618 retail units - 361 owned and 257 operated under franchise.
According to Dia, "after a good start to the year, in the second quarter activities in Portugal continued to progress very well", adding that like-for-like sales in both Portugal and Spain "were positive" despite a “very challenging environment".
