German discount grocer Aldi looks set to follow rivals Lidl and Carrefour into Italy, according to reports.
Reuters reports that Aldi's Austrian arm, Hofer, is coordinating the move, and it will be Aldi Süd's first entry into a new market since 2008.
"Aldi Süd [...] will over the course of the coming years expand into Italy," Hofer said in an emailed statement, as reported by Reuters.
Aldi remains Europe's biggest discount chain, operating over 5,000 stores in nine countries, with Germany and the United States its biggest markets.
In March, ESM reported that discount chain Hofer has once again cast its eye on the Slovak market. Last month, rival chain Lidl announced a five-year investment plan in Italy worth over €1 billion.
