Discount supermarket chain Minipreço, owned by Spanish retail group DIA, is the top franchise brand in Portugal, with 288 franchised units of a total of 634 stores.
The top three in the annual report by Portugal’s Institute for Franchising Information (IIF) also includes retailer Intermarché with all of its 232 stores in Portugal being franchised.
Last year, the franchising networks generated a turnover of €4.6 billion in Portugal, corresponding to 2.7 per cent of GDP, and created 63,670 jobs, or 1.4 per cent of employment generated in 2014.
The Portuguese franchising market consists of 524 franchised brands, 63.4 per cent of which originate in Portugal. After Portuguese brands, the national franchise market in 2014 was dominated by Spanish brands, which account for 13 per cent of new networks, and by brands from the USA, France, UK, Italy and Brazil (14.6%).
