Irish retailer Dunnes Stores is undergoing its 'biggest change in more than a generation', according to the Irish Independent, as chief executive Margaret Heffernan appoints her daughter Anne Heffernan and niece Sharon McMahon as company directors.
While both have been involved in the Dunnes Stores business for several years, it is reported that Anne Heffernan now leads day-to-day operations, while McMahon runs the group's property and investment portfolio.
It is not yet known who will take over the business from Margaret Heffernan (75) and her brother Frank Dunne (74), however, the Irish Independent suggests that these appointments signal that the retail chain could remain in family control.
Dunnes Stores is currently the third largest supermarket in Ireland, with 21.1% market share, according to the latest figures from Kantar Worldpanel.
In the most recent quarter the retailer saw sales rise by 2%, putting it close behind market leader SuperValu and UK supermarket giant Tesco.
