Edeka Nordbayern-Sachsen-Thüringen (Edeka NST), one of seven regional businesses in the Edeka Group, has reported a 14% growth in retail sales, to €4.6 billion, in its 2020 financial year.
The retailer attributed this growth to the performance of independent retailers in the group.
The increase in retail sales was driven by the group's expansion programme and the 'store relaunch programme' for repositioning existing stores.
Market Share
Edeka NST gained market share in a competitive environment dominated by discount stores, it said. It retained its leading position in the region, with Kaufland placing second and Netto Marken-Discount in third.
Excluding independent retailers, external group sales increased 10.4%, to €4.2 billion in 2020 compared to the previous financial year.
The biggest drivers of this segment were a 10.6% growth in the Edeka wholesale division and an 11.6% increase in its meat production facilities, the company added.
'Record Volumes'
Edeka added that the group delivered 'record volumes' in 2020, processing around 200 million packages in wholesale logistics and around 49 million kilograms of goods at its meat production sites.
Edeka-Foodservice only made a below-average contribution to sales growth due to the pandemic.
In the first five months of its 2021 financial year, Edeka NST saw retail sales increase by 7.0% in absolute terms and 5.4% on a like-for-like basis.
The group's market share in the region has also increased.
Elsewhere, Edeka Nord recently reported a 13.9% year-on-year growth in consolidated sales to €3.5 billion in its financial year 2020, with consolidated profit amounting to €34.0 million.
