Spanish retailer Eroski has donated more than 1,240 tonnes of food to socially responsible organizations so far this year, thanks to its ‘Desperdicio Cero’ (Zero Waste) programme.
The news was announced by Alejandro Martínez Berriochoa, director of Social Responsibility of Eroski, during a recent gathering of food professionals.
The main target of the Desperdicio Cero programme is to avoid any waste of products that are otherwise suitable for consumption, such as fresh products that have small defects on their packaging.
Eroski has implemented its Desperdicio Cero plan in all its hypermarkets and supermarkets, collaborating with more than 50 social groups, since 2013.
