Spain’s National Commission of Markets and Competition (CNMC) has approved Eroski’s plan to acquire 10 Simply supermarkets in Bizkaia.
The transaction includes five stores in Bilbao and one each in Basauri, Erandio, Galdakao, Getxo, and Santurtzi, with a combined commercial area of approximately 8,500 square metres.
Stronger Retail Network
The retail giant agreed to acquire the stores from Sabeko Banaketa for an undisclosed sum and described the move as part of its strategy to strengthen its network in Northern Spain.
The incorporation of these supermarkets to the group will also contribute to its objective of reaching 75 new store openings this year, the retailer added.
Store Transformation
Eroski plans to revamp the stores to its ‘Contigo’ (with you) model, which focuses on promoting healthy and sustainable food, commitment to local and fresh seasonal products, and more personalised customer service.
The retailer plans to retain the workforce in all acquired stores and expects to add another 300 professionals to the team.
