Spanish retailer Eroski has announced that it upgraded an additional 197 stores to its 'Contigo' format last year, following an investment of more than €26 million.
This means that the total number of stores operating under the Contigo model is now 845, with 80% of the group's sales made through its remodelled store network last year.
The remodelled stores have increased their product offering by 15%, with increased focus on fresh produce as well as the retailer’s commitment to seasonal, local food, it said.
Commenting on the transformation process, Rosa Carabel, director general of Eroski's commercial network, said, “We offer consumers easy access to the food produced in their region, so that they can integrate them into their daily habits, while promoting an agri-food sector with a highly diversified production network."
Expanded Range
The diet and organic product segments have also increased their floor space in the new stores. In addition, the retailer has added a wide range of specific products aimed at food intolerances, including gluten-free and lactose-free items, and products suitable for diets low in fat, sugar or salt.
The new stores also include a wider assortment of products in the oils, pastes, chocolates, teas, and personal care segments.
The retailer has also geared its focus towards energy efficiency and reducing environmental impact, with key elements pertaining to climatic design, chilled installations, lighting systems, and waste reduction.
