EuroCommerce the group that represents retailers in Europe, has called for ‘risk-based, proportionate and pragmatic rules’ that will facilitate the continued sustainable growth of the organic sector.
The call comes as demand for organic products now exceeds the capacity that farmers can produce. EuroCommerce says that this is due to the regulations relating to ‘organic’ being too stringent.
“Over-complicated and unnecessary controls, certification and environmental requirements, will make organic products even more expensive for consumers, and impact negatively on consumption,” says EuroCommerce Director-General Christian Verschueren.
“EuroCommerce is not opposed to clear rules, but these need to be appropriate to a market where it is already difficult to meet ever-growing demand. We need to boost and not throttle production and sales of organic.”
