Weak consumer sentiment in Germany will not affect Christmas business as the propensity for consumers to buy increases during the period, according to the latest consumption barometer from HDE (Handelsverband Deutschland).
The HDE consumption barometer recorded a new low for the year in December, reflecting cautiousness among German consumers about the next three months.
Weak Consumer Sentiment
The decline in consumer sentiment is a result of declining income expectations among consumers, as workers in the labour market are beginning to see signs that job creation will lose considerable momentum, the HDE noted.
The HDE consumption barometer releases a monthly report based on a survey of 2,000 people on factors relevant to consumption, such as the propensity to buy and spend, and their financial situation.
It does not reflect the current consumer behaviour, but the expected mood over the coming three months, the HDE added.
