Finnish Grocery Sees Sales Decline 1% In February

Grocery retailers in Finland posted sales of €1.23 billion in February 2017, which is one per cent down on the same month the previous year, the Finnish Grocery Trade Association (Päivittäistavarakauppa ry) has revealed.

The retail price index of daily consumer goods rose by 0.3% overall, with food and non-alcoholic beverages seeing prices decline 0.5%, and alcoholic beverages and tobacco seeing a 5.0% increase.

The association noted that February had one fewer sales day this year, owing to the Leap Year in 2016, which accounted for part of the slump in sales.

While sales increased in large supermarkets year-on-year for the period, by 0.9%, across the wider industry, there were declines, with small stores seeing a decline of 3.7% year-on-year, supermarket sales declining by 3.7% and hypermarket sales declining by 0.5%.

The statistics are based on sales across the Finnish grocery industry, including at chains such as K-Citymarket, K-Supermarket, K-Market, Neste K -liikenneasemat, Alepa, Sale, Prisma, S-market, ABC, Valintatalo, Siwa, Lidl, Stockmann, Tokmanni, M-ketju, Minimani and R-kioski.
