Five grocery retail companies are among the top 10 largest privately-held European companies in 2016, based on 2015 revenues.
The ranking, published by financial intelligence company PrivCo, was led by Dutch-based energy and commodities company Vitol Holding (€157.7 billion in revenue), followed by German company Trafigura Beheer (€89.5 billion) which markets oil, metals and minerals.
In the third and fourth place were two German retailers: Schwarz Group, (owner of the Lidl supermarket chain, with 2015 revenue of €85.7 billion, and Aldi Einkauf GmbH & Co. (€80.7 billion).
French retailer Auchan Group placed sixth (€54.2 billion), while Germany’s REWE Group, with operations in the retail and tourism sectors, was seventh in the ranking (€52.4 billion).
Rounding off the top 10 was the Edeka group, which owns the biggest supermarket chain in Germany (€48.4 billion).
