Discount chain Hofer, the trading name of Aldi Süd in Austria, has once again cast its eye on the Slovak market.
It's not the first time the business, has looked to extend its operations over the border into Slovakia. In 2005, Hofer decided to postpone a planned expansion, citing unfavourable situations in the Slovak market.
Now, the discounter has changed its rhetoric. Hofer's PR manager Magdalena Marhold told Hospodárske Noviny daily that, "Aldi Süd, parent company of Hofer, keeps the potential foreign markets under review. For strategic reasons we cannot disclose more information".
According to an expert interviewed by the newspaper, Hofer may find Slovakia interesting.
"The arrival of Hofer would enrich the Slovak retail sector, as there is only one real discounter present in the country – Lidl,“market analyst Ľubomír Drahovský told the Aktuality.sk news portal.
