Retailers in Germany experienced a price-adjusted sales growth of 1.5% in June 2017, compared to the same period last year, according to Destatis, the German federal statistical office. Non-adjusted growth amounted to 3.1%.
In June 2017, stores were open on 25 days, one day less than in June 2016. Seasonally-adjusted sales grew by 1.1% overall since May 2017.
Sales Growth
Retail sales in the food, beverage, and tobacco segments experienced growth of 2.5% on a price-adjusted basis and 4.8% nominally, compared to June 2016. With a price-adjusted increase of 2.8% and nominal growth of 5.2%, supermarkets and consumer markets recorded a higher sales growth than specialist retailers, which recorded a price-adjusted increase of 0.7% and nominal growth of 0.6%.
Sales in non-food retail rose by 0.8% on a price-adjusted basis and by 1.7% nominally. With a 3.1% price-adjusted increase and +2.2% nominal growth, furniture, household appliances, and building materials registered the biggest growth in sales.
Overall, the German retail market noted a sales growth of 1.7% (price-adjusted) and 3.5% (nominally) in the first half of 2017, compared to the same period last year.
