German hypermarket chain Real, part of Metro Group, has raised more than €135,000 for children's charity Unicef, with the sale of 20,244 packets of Unicef Christmas cards last year.
Real has sold greeting cards for Unicef since 2011, as part of a social initiative titled 'Handeln aus Verantwortung', which roughly translates as ‘taking action out of feeling responsibility’.
Unicef associate Liz Baffoe accepted the check from Real general manager Thierry Guillon-Verne at a ceremony at the retailer's Markthalle Krefeld, Germany last week.
"We are very pleased that so many customers have supported the Christmas campaign by purchasing cards," said Guillon-Verne. "As a modern enterprise, we take our social responsibility very seriously and are engaged in supporting international as well as local projects."
International aid-agency Unicef supports children in 150 countries worldwide. It organises and provides such basics as vaccines, clean drinking water and school supplies.
