French retailer Groupe Casino has released its financial reports for the second quarter of 2017, showing that total group sales were up by 7.9%, and by 3% on a same-store basis.
In France, same-store sales experienced growth of 1.8%, of which 2.9% was in food retail, while in Brazil, GPA Food sales increased by 9.1% on an organic basis and by 5.9% on a same-store basis.
French Retail
Retail sales in France, excluding VAT, totalled €4,757 million in the second quarter of the year, led by growth in the Casino Supermarchés, Franprix, and Monoprix chains.
Monoprix saw an increase in same-store sales of 3.6%, along with Casino Supermarchés (+3.2%), Franprix (+3.2%), Convenience (+2.7%), Géant Casino (+0.8%), and Leader Price (+0.5%).
In the group's e-commerce business, gross merchandise volume at Cdiscount increased by 11.5% on a same-store basis, with 11.6% growth in traffic and an expanding market share.
Latin America
Total retail sales in Latin America experienced an increase of 17.7% on a reported basis, and 6.4% on an organic basis in a context of decelerating inflation and lower foreign currency appreciation against the euro.
At GPA Food, total sales including VAT amounted to €3,280 million, which represents growth of 23.2% on a reported basis, and 9.9% on an organic basis. This performance was led by the ongoing recovery of the Extra hypermarkets and growth at the Assaí cash and carry stores.
Exito also experienced further growth in total sales, but will provide a detailed report of its second quarter sales next month.
