Italian Christmas Sweet Exports to Net Over €280m

Over €280 million worth of Italian homemade Christmas sweets will be exported worldwide this year, mainly to France, Germany and the UK.

According to the Observatory of the International Exhibition of Artisan Confectionery (Sigep), the industry consists of around 90,000 companies with 158,000 employees.

For their part, Italians will spend approximately €400 million for the Christmas cakes, with an estimated growth of 0.7% on the previous year (which ended with a growth of 0.4%), totalling 562,000 tons.

The real protagonist will be the traditional sweet that is put under the tree: the panettone, present on 80% of Italian tables and in more than 5 million gourmet baskets.

One of the novelties for Christmas, according to world champion chocolatier David Comaschi, will be “Panettone Sacher”, merging two international sweet specialties.
