Italian grocery shoppers spend an average of €1,528 per year in Esselunga stores, making the chain supermarket with the highest per-customer earnings, Nielsen data has revealed.
The study, carried out by Retail Watch, utilised Nielsen data on sales in Italian supermarkets and hypermarkets in determining its findings.
Selex experiences the second-highest average level of spend (€983), followed by Coop (€886).
The top 10 also includes Ipecoop (€851); Famila (€837); Conad (€731); Simply and IperSimply (€726); Il Gigante (€688); Bennet (€664); and Carrefour Market (€642).
Volume Growth
According to a separate Retail Watch study, supermarket sales in Italy, measured in volume terms, were stagnant in the period between 2008 and 2016, although both discounts and superstores registered an impressive increase in sales per square metre.
Overall, total sales per square metre amounted to €5,524 on average in 2007, dropping to €5,409 in 2016. This was due to the negative performance of hypermarkets (down from €7,592 to €5,923), supermarkets (from €5,637 to €5,342) and independent stores (from €4,270 to €3,648).
At the same time, sales in discount stores went up from €4,218 per square metre in 2007 to €5,023 per square metre in 2016, as did sales in superstores (from €7,538 to €8,488).
