Italians spent 5.2% more in discount stores in August 2019 compared with the same period last year, a report from Coldiretti suggests.
The study, based on data from Istat, also found that one-quarter of the food items bought by Italians are on promotion.
Products that are most often on promotion include olive oil, pasta, tomato preserves, wine, and fruit, the study revealed.
Italian consumers are willing to shop in multiple stores and experiment with alternative channels on the rise, such as online sales, group sales, or sales directly from the farmer, the report said.
Burden Of Promotions
Coldiretti has warned that the burden of promotions will impact suppliers by creating imbalances in bargaining power in the supply chain.
Meanwhile, Istat data indicates a 0.7% growth in Italian retail sales in value and 0.5% in volume in August 2019.
Both food sales (+1.1% in value and +0.1% in volume) and non-food sales (+0.4% in value and +0.8% in volume) registered growth, while e-commerce grew by 19.4% in the same period.
