Portuguese retail group Jerónimo Martins has established a joint venture in Poland for the production and import of Asian food.
According to Polish portal Money.pl, the owner of the Biedronka discount supermarket chain in Poland plans to build a factory for ready meals, to benefit from the popularity of Asian food in Eastern Europe.
Although Biedronka has declined to comment on the issue, Money.pl has learned that a request to set up Asia Style has been submitted to the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection (UOKiK), by Jerónimo Martins and Vershold Solutions, a Hong Kong-based company specializing in the import of Chinese products to Europe, with commercial networks in several countries.
The new plant could be located in Gdansk, where Jerónimo Martins last year purchased land, or in Brwinów, where it already has a distribution centre.
The core business of Asia Style will be to provide wholesale services and imports of products and semi-prepared foods, as well as the production of Asian ready meals and their distribution.
