Dutch retailer Jumbo has announced a new job-bridge initiative, in partnership with Eindhoven City Council and social enterprise Springplank040, established to assist the long-term unemployed.
The company has agreed to facilitate internships for 13 long-term unemployed job-seekers, as a hands-on introduction to working in retail - and working with customers - and is willing to offer secondment contracts to those who prove themselves up to the job, during their internship.
"We feel it is our duty to help people who deserve more support," said Gea Cooper, director of human resources at Jumbo. "We also believe that practical work experience is the best stepping stone to a permanent job and a more stable life."
Councilman Staf Depla commented, "I've noticed that companies are increasingly willing to give people a chance to get started, whatever their employment history. It's great to see Jumbo Eindhoven making such an effort: every job and each initiative counts."
