Dutch retailer Jumbo has launched a new convenience store concept, Foodmarkt City, and has opened its first outlet under the banner in Groningen.
In collaboration with restaurant chain La Place, the new store will feature Jumbo products alongside a selection of freshly prepared food.
The in-store bakery and kitchen will produce bread, sandwiches, pizza, sushi, soups and juices throughout the day, and customers will be able to eat their food in the store's cafe area.
Innovation
"Foodmarkt City responds to the needs of customers in the city," said Colette Cloosterman van Eerd, Jumbo's CCO for formulation and innovation.
"The traditional separation between supermarkets and food trade is disappearing, especially in the inner city," she said, adding that customers are now driven by "convenience, speed, health and price".
The retailer has also launched a Foodmarkt City smartphone app, where customers can order freshly cooked meals for delivery. This service is currently only available at the new Groningen store, but Jumbo hopes to expand this concept in the future.
