Jumbo, part of the Auchan Group, has been named the cheapest supermarket in Portugal in a study by Portuguese consumers association Deco Proteste. The study claimed that consumers can save up to €350 per year by choosing a particular store in which to do their shopping.
The study analysed 480 supermarkets (and four online stores) in 77 municipalities over the period May to July 2015. Two baskets were considered: one with 83 products with defined characteristics of products, for those who prefer the best-selling brands, and another more adapted to new consumer habits, combining major brands with private label brands.
Jumbo was the winner for both baskets in mainland Portugal, while Continente Modelo came out on top in the Azores and Pingo Doce in Madeira.
In the national ranking, Pingo Doce improved its price levels and placed second, while Continente/Continente Modelo, with 3% higher prices, dropped to third place.
Lisbon, Faro and Santarém are the districts with the greatest price variances, with savings reaching up to 20%. On the contrary, consumers can save the least in Guarda, Portalegre and Beja.
However choosing well compensates. For example, in the district of Lisbon, the study claimed it is possible to save up to €350 by opting for Jumbo (a store in Dolce Vita Tejo, Amadora) instead of Spar (Cascais).
