Aamulehti, the Finnish morning newspaper, has carried out an interview with Kesko CEO Mikko Helander, during which he evinced concern at the effect discount retailing is having on Finland's agricultural industry.
He expounded the belief that a difficult period could ensue for the sector if foreign discount chains continue to gain market share in his home country. He said also that a want of indigenous trading would be conducive to an impoverished shopping experience for the consumer, as foreign grocers are not as attentive to the need for specific, local foodstuffs.
He stated "The agricultural sector would be lost if we do not have, for example, Valio, Fazer, Raisio, and [Finnish] meat companies.
