Lidl Portugal has opened its 16th supermarket in the centre of Lisbon, which is also its first within a revamped sports complex.
The new store is the result of a partnership between the German retail chain and Os Belenenses, a historic football club in Lisbon.
The 1,400-square-metre store in central Lisbon features a modern design, a car park with a capacity for 150 vehicles plus two fast-charging stations, and a locker service for customer pickups.
The €12 million project involved the redevelopment of the Restelo sports complex, as well as upgrading the road and lighting infrastructure in the surrounding area. It also involved the creation of a rooftop garden and a new green space for leisure and rest.
Lidl Croatia
Elsewhere, Lidl has opened its third logistics and distribution centre in Croatia, investing €120 million.
Strategically located by the A3 highway, about 40 kilometres from Zagreb, the Križ logistics centre spreads over 16.7 hectares, allowing for modernised reception, storage, and the shipping of goods to Lidl stores in the country.
Focused on digitalisation and automation, the facility was built with sustainability in mind, utilising surplus heat and solar power for energy needs.
Lidl Slovenia
Meanwhile, in neighbouring Slovenia, Lidl claims to be the first grocery retailer in the country to embrace the EU Disability Card programme. This initiative allows people with disabilities to access discounts from participating businesses across the EU.
By simply showing their EU Disability Card at the checkout on the 15th of each month – or the prior day, if it falls on a holiday – eligible customers will receive a 10% discount on their purchases.
The card itself is free and obtainable from administrative offices within Slovenia.
