Lidl Belgium has announced the launch of Lidl Simpl – a pop-up webshop that will allow users to order fresh products online and have them delivered to their homes on a bicycle.
Filip Watteeuw of Vessels of Mobility and Public Works in Ghent said, "We are pleased that supermarket chains now also follow our logic of a cycle-friendly city."
Presently, the service is only available to customers residing within a radius of around 3.75 kilometres in the Sint-Niklaaskerk area in Ghent.
Wide Range Of Options
Consumers can choose from a range of around four hundred, fresh Lidl products including yogurt, toppings, vegetables, fish, and meat.
They can also avail free home deliveries on orders amounting to, or exceeding, €25.
Lidl's spokeswoman, Isabelle Colbrandt, said "With this initiative, we want to help families and students in Ghent to win back time.
"Because of our consumers' busy lifestyles, it is not always easy for them to have the time to pick up their shopping. That is why we now offer our fresh products for Ghent residents online, and at the same prices as in the store."
Sustainable Home Delivery
Bicycle courier service, Cargo Velo, will be responsible for the deliveries.
Cargo Velo's Jochen Fonck said, "It is clear that Lidl's ambition to set up home deliveries of fresh food as sustainably as possible, and that of Cargo Velo to stand out as a professional bicycle courier company and continue to grow steadily in city logistics, is a great match."
As of now, Lidl Simpl will run on a trial basis until February of next year, and the retailer intends to extend the service to other Belgian cities.
