The ten biggest grocery retailers in Croatia, excluding market leader Konzum, collectively achieved a turnover of HRK 23.9 billion (€3.24 billion) in 2017, up HRK 1.7 billion year-on-year.
As a result, the total combined profit of the retailers increased by more than HRK 200 million to HRK 681 million (€92.3 million).
The figures were revealed by local news platform T-Portal.
Konzum, far and away the country's largest grocer, was not included in the data, due to the ongoing extraordinary administration process at the retailer's parent, Agrokor.
Major Players
In 2017, second-placed Lidl further strengthened its positioning, with an impressive 16% revenue growth to HRK 4.6 billion (€623.2 million). Profit amounted to HRK 348 million (€47.1 million).
Local retailer Plodine, which places third in the market, recorded a 10% growth in turnover to HRK 4.4 billion (€596.1 million), while profit jumped by 71% to HRK 136 million (€18.4 million).
Spar surpassed Kaufland to become the fourth largest retailer in the country, with a turnover growth of 45.5% (helped by its acquisition of Billa’s operations in Croatia), to HRK 3.7 billion, (€501.3 million).
Kaufland posted a 7% increase in turnover to HRK 3.6 billion (€488.2 million), but ended the year with a loss of HRK 81 million (€11 million).
Next, Croatian retailer Tommy registered growth in turnover to HRK 2.7 billion (+14%), while Studenac posted a turnover of HRK 1.6 billion and a profit of HRK 106 million.
