Lidl Portugal To Invest €50m In Store Network

Discounter Lidl has earmarked €50 million for the redesign and expansion of its store network in Portugal this year.

An official company source told the Lusa news agency that Lidl has invested €12.5 million in the period from January to May.

Last week, Lidl opened its 242th store in Portugal in Espinho, as part of a €2.5 million investment. The new supermarket will be twice as large as its traditional stores, being the fourth of the new generation of Lidl outlets.

Over the past two years, Lidl has focused on the modernisation and remodeling of its store estate, for which it has invested about €60 million.

Lidl plans to renovate about 25 supermarkets this year, of which six will adopt the new store concept.

"We are consolidating our network so the increase in the number of stores is marginal. Our focus is to ensure a portfolio of redesigned stores that provide a fast and comfortable shopping experience”, said the same source, adding that about 60 stores have been remodeled in the past two years.

More than half of the products sold in the store are of Portuguese origin.
