In the same week Lidl opened its biggest French store yet, it has now been given the green light to do the same in the UK, according to reports. The News & Star reports that the German discounter has received the go-head for a new supermarket in Maryport, Cumbria.
The local council's development panel unanimously voted to approve a planning application the 15,295 square foot store, which is set to be the company's largest in the UK.
The new store is expected to create 30 jobs, with 60 construction jobs while it is built.
Locals believe that the new supermarket would improve consumer choice in the town, where less than a third of residents’ supermarket shopping is currently reportedly done.
As of yet, Lidl has not formally spoken of the strategy behind the move to open much larger square-footage stores.
