German discount chain Lidl has put for a proposal for a 2,500-square metre shopping centre on the site of La-Mancha-style windmills in Barcelona, according to Spanish news source thelocal.es.
That plan would see the company reconditioning the restaurant currently on the site and incorporating the three protected mills into the project’s design.
The report states that the distinctive windmills were built in 1961 in the suburb of Esplugues and placed on the local heritage list in 1984 because of their 'unusual and singular profile in the city'.
Lidl are also looking to create a new park at the other end of Esplugues.
