Tesco has appointed Matthew Barnes as the new chief executive of Tesco UK, effective 1 March 2024.
Barnes succeeds Jason Tarry, who has decided to part ways with Tesco in March 2024 after more than 33 years, including six years as chief executive of the UK business, the retailer noted.
Over the years, Tarry guided Tesco through its turnaround and more recently the pandemic.
He was instrumental in rebuilding its competitiveness in the UK and putting customers back at the heart of the business.
'An Immense Contribution'
Tesco Group CEO Ken Murphy said, “Jason has made an immense contribution to our business. Under his leadership, Tesco today is the most competitive we have ever been, built on exceptionally strong foundations of doing the right thing for our customers and colleagues.
"His values and commitment to creating a high-performing, supportive and diverse culture have been key to creating the Tesco we know today."
Matthew Barnes
Barnes is an accomplished professional, who has previously held many senior positions in Aldi.
He served as chief executive of Aldi UK & Ireland CEO before being promoted to co-head Aldi Süd’s executive board, where he was responsible for many of the discounter’s international businesses and its global sourcing, buying and supply chain unit.
Commenting on Barnes's appointment, Murphy stated, "I believe the combination of Matthew’s extensive retail experience, competitive spirit and challenger mindset will help us continue to win in the UK market and evolve our thinking about what customers will want from Tesco in the future."
Earlier this month, the retailer reported a 7.8% increase in like-for-like sales in the first half of its financial year, as it reported volume and sales mix that was 'ahead of expectations'.
