Italian discount supermarket chain MD Discount has started the roll-out of a new store concept in Grumello del Monte near Bergamo, which will be applied to 43 more stores over the next three years.
The store covers a total area of 1,500 square metres (including parking), and features a functional and efficient layout with large Fruit and Vegetables, Deli and Butcher departments.
Fresh products are the distinctive character of the MD brand, and with this in mind, the store boasts a 'store within a store', dedicated to fresh produce.
According to chairman and founder, Patrizio Podini, the innovative format "makes even more functional the excellent relationship between quality, price and the strong propensity towards fresh products that have always characterized the brand”.
MD Discount has received major financial support for the growth of its retail network from a pool of banks, led by UniCredit, as part of a deal worth €100 million.
MD Discount is part of retail group MD, which operates a total of 725 stores in Italy (including the insignia LD Market) and has a 15 per cent market share.
