Mercadona has announced that it will enter the Portuguese market in the locality of Oporto, in the north of the country, which will also play host to the company's Portuguese headquarters.
The retailer will operate in Portugal in conjunction with Irmãdona, a subsidiary it created for this purpose, but the stores will retain the Mercadona name, just as the brand is known in Spain.
As reported by revistainforetail.com, the choice of Oporto makes sense, as it's close to the company's existing logistic centres.
Mercadona is planing an initial investment of €25 million and the creation of 200 jobs in Portugal.
