Metro AG has announced that its corporate headquarters has been awarded an 'excellent' rating by sustainability assessment body BREEAM.
BREEAM is a global leader in rating the sustainability of buildings.
It evaluates the environmental, social, and economic sustainability of properties by using standards developed by the UK-based Building Research Establishment (BRE).
Sustainability Day
The certificate was unveiled on 18 June to mark Sustainability Day at the Metro campus.
Oliver Steinert, the director of real estate finance at Metro Properties, said, "The Metro AG headquarters project entailed the remodelling of an existing building. The building's BREEAM certification creates transparency and allows the targeted identification of improvement potential in the sustainable use of the property."
The Remodelling Project
The company's headquarters was remodelled by Metro Properties with a special focus on sustainability and the use of natural building materials.
It sourced wood for the benches and moss walls from an audited value chain.
The building has incorporated features like water-saving taps and LED lighting with motion detectors and daylight control.
Metro has also made provisions for bee and insect 'hotels' as well as bat houses in the buildings' premises.
'Keeping With The Times'
Metro's chief human resources officer and labour director, Heiko Hutmacher, said, "As a company whose actions are in keeping with the times, we want to improve our life cycle assessment and meet the sustainability goals we have set for ourselves.
"This also applies to the renovation of our buildings and outlets - which is a part of what we consider right," he added.
