Wholesale giant Metro recently announced plans to offload it’s Real hypermarket chain, however that hasn’t stopped the group from investing in its Markthalle concept, with the second such outlet having just opened in Braunschweig.
The group also plans to open a number of additional Markthalle stores in the coming year.
Shopping Experience
The 10,000 square metre Markthalle Braunschweig offers a more heightened shopping experience, Metro said, with additional levels of service, a larger fresh selection and a food court featuring dishes from all over the world.
“We are pursuing our strategy of converting our markets into the best shopping experiences in Germany,” commented Real CEO Patrick Müller-Sarmiento.
“After Braunschweig, further locations with Markthalle elements will follow this fiscal year, including at Real locations in Aschaffenburg, Balingen and in the Berlin area.”
Product Diversity
Müller-Sarmiento added that the Markthalle assortment “sets [Metro] apart from the competition. Here we completely redefine the terms diversity, freshness and quality”.
The group’s first Markthalle outlet in Krefeld (pictured), which opened in 2016, recorded a 30% increase in sales in the first year of trading, Metro has said.
