British supermarket chain Morrisons has banned £2 coins in a selection of its stores' self-service tills following a significant increase in shoppers using similar foreign coins in the machines.
The currency is no longer accepted at self-scanning machines in selected West Midlands stores.
The £2 coin looks similar to the two-euro coin, the Iranian 250 rial and the Thai 10 baht piece.
There has been a huge rise in the problem at Morrison self-service areas with all of these coins having been used in the past.
A spokesman for Morrisons said, “A number of stores have had foreign currency passed off as £2 coins at self-checkouts.”
“While we fix the issue, we have temporarily stopped them accepting any £2 coins. Customers are still free to use them at all manned checkouts.”
The supermarket apologised for any inconvenience that the issue is causing, but added it did not expect “the fix to take long.”
